Kidney Transplant Process at UPMC Hamot

UPMC Content 3

UPMC Hamot's transplant team offers both pre- and post-surgical clinics for transplant patients. Clinics are open to patients who have had surgery either at UPMC Hamot or in Pittsburgh.

Before Your Transplant

Once your referring physician determines you may be a candidate for a kidney transplant, you will be scheduled for a pretransplant evaluation with our kidney transplant team. The evaluation will include a medical and surgical history.

If our team concludes a kidney transplant would be the best option for you, you will be placed on the transplant waiting list. A member of our team will notify you when a donor kidney becomes available.

After Your Transplant

After your kidney transplant, the transplant team will see you regularly to monitor your medications and blood work to ensure your new kidney is functioning properly.

Living Donor Kidney Transplant

Living-donor kidney transplant is an option where a healthy kidney from a living person is removed and transplanted into a person with a failing kidney. Living donation allows patients to receive a transplant sooner and before they become too sick. Friends, family members, and even strangers have chosen to become living donors in order to help people in need.
