​Peter Grimaldi, PT, ATC

As the program director for UPMC Hamot Sports Medicine, Peter supervises a staff of 15 certified athletic trainers who provide onsite physical therapy for student athletes at 10 local school districts. He works directly with patients as a physical therapist.

For more than three decades, Peter’s clinical focus has been on sports and orthopaedic rehabilitation and education programs for injury prevention. He served on the sports medicine staff during Mercyhurst University’s first football season and has periodically been a member of the university’s adjunct faculty for more than 30 years.

Peter uses his own injury experience and recovery to help his patients return to active lifestyles, using both sports and general fitness in his physical therapy programs.

Robert Deppen, PT, DPT, MS, ATC

A sports medicine physical therapist at UPMC Hamot for more than 30 years and a certified athletic trainer, Robert focuses on therapeutic exercise strategies and teaching self-care and optimal body mechanics for healing.

A past instructor with the physical therapy doctoral program at Rocky Mountain University in Provo, Utah, Robert has lectured on functional lower extremity rehabilitation throughout the country. His day-long seminar was featured at the American Physical Therapy Association’s Montana and South Carolina state annual meetings.

Robert contributed a chapter to a sports rehabilitation text book and also is the lead author for two journal publications. In addition, he has worked with three medical teams serving in Haiti.

Education:

  • Pennsylvania State University ― athletic training degree, 1981
  • Hahnemann University ― physical therapy degree, 1982, and Outstanding Graduate Award
  • University of Pittsburgh ― advanced master of science degree in physical therapy (graduated Cum Laude), 1991
  • University of Montana ― doctorate in physical therapy, May 2014 (expected)

Andrew Hay, PT, DPT, CSCS

Andrew returned to Erie after having begun his career in the Washington D.C. area to join the UPMC Hamot Sports Medicine team. As a sports medicine and orthopaedic physical therapist, Andrew uses treatment strategies to promote recovery, return to sport, and improve physical performance.

A Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), a former collegiate soccer player at Gannon University and a former personal trainer, Andrew enjoys working with a wide variety of competitive and recreational athletes designing rehab and post-rehab treatment programs.
