Free wigs available to those who qualify through wig bank and American Cancer Society
HERMITAGE, January 23, 2012– Cancer patients who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy treatments are eligible for free wigs through the American Cancer Society wig salon (formerly known as the wig bank), which is located at the Womancare Center of UPMC Horizon.
To receive a wig, the patient may either call the American Cancer Society Patient Service Center (24/7) toll free number or ask their physician to send a referral form to the Patient Service Center. An American Cancer Society volunteer coordinator will then contact the patient to arrange an appointment time.
Cancer is a life-changing diagnosis and the hair loss associated with some cancer treatments can be devastating. According to a recent study, nearly 60 percent of women consider hair loss the most dreaded side effect they face when undergoing chemotherapy.
At the American Cancer Society wig salons, any woman who is experiencing hair loss as a result of treatment can receive a free, brand-new wig. In some areas, stylists are also available to cut and style the wigs at no cost to the patient, or women can attend a Look Good…Feel Better® session, where a licensed cosmetologist will show them tips and tricks for hair and makeup during treatment.
