Advanced Radiation Treatment Now Available at UPMC CancerCenter at UPMC Horizon
FARRELL, October 10, 2012– One of the most advanced methods of radiation oncology treatment is now available at UPMC CancerCenter at UPMC Horizon.
The center now offers RapidArc® volumetric modality arc therapy (VMAT), a method to deliver intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). VMAT is two to eight times faster and more precise than traditional IMRT, resulting in more comfort for patients and less damage to surrounding normal, healthy tissue that does not need treatment.
According to Raymond Wynn, MD, medical director of the UPMC CancerCenter at UPMC Horizon, the primary goal of RapidArc is to deliver radiation in a shorter time frame – three to five minutes as opposed to 15 or 20 minutes.
“RapidArc® enables us to offer state of the art radiation therapy in our community; patients are able to receive the same treatment offered in Pittsburgh and other cities right here at UPMC Horizon,” says Dr. Wynn, MD. “The speed in which we deliver radiation allows us to deliver a complex treatment with fewer complications. It puts our center on the cutting edge of cancer centers in terms of radiation therapy advances.”
The precision of the treatment makes a difference in outcomes, Dr. Wynn says. VMAT works particularly well for prostate cancer, head and neck tumors, brain tumors, and gynecologic cancers.
The UPMC CancerCenter at UPMC Horizon offers radiation and medical oncology services at UPMC Horizon’s Shenango Valley campus as well as medical oncology at the Greenville campus. For more information about the UPMC CancerCenter at UPMC Horizon, call 724-983-7570.
