Minimally Invasive Treatment for Varicose Veins Now Available Through UPMC Horizon Vascular Institute
FARRELL AND GREENVILLE, June 1, 2012– Endovascular laser therapy for the treatment of varicose veins is now available from vascular surgeons Jon Henwood, DO, and Christopher Esper, DO, of the UPMC Horizon Vascular Institute.
Living with varicose veins can be an uncomfortable and painful experience. The enlarged veins, which usually occur in the legs, may be caused by a variety of factors including obesity, pregnancy, age, and injury. Varicose veins may also cause swelling, blood clots, and skin ulcers.
The purpose of endovascular laser therapy is to shut down the vein by inserting a laser below the skin through a catheter. The procedure lasts about 30 minutes and can be performed on an outpatient basis with local anesthesia.
Surgery to treat varicose veins usually involves making an incision and removing the vein. With endovascular laser therapy, the patient experiences just a needle stick.
“It’s a quick procedure that is less invasive than surgery and has fewer post-operative pain issues than traditional surgery,” says Dr. Esper. “It’s much more comfortable for patients.”
The procedure is usually indicated for younger, active patients whose varicose veins have not improved through the use of compression stockings. However, endovascular laser therapy may not completely eliminate the need for stockings. “You have to be prepared to use compression stockings both before and after the procedure,” Dr. Esper says.
Side effects from endovascular laser therapy may include bruising and a tingling skin sensation. The procedure usually leaves no scarring, reduces pain and swelling, and improves the appearance of the leg.
