​UPMC Horizon Named Joint Commission Top Performer on Key Quality Measures for Second Consecutive Year

FARRELL AND GREENVILLE, September 19, 2012– UPMC Horizon today was named one of the nation’s Top Performers on Key Quality Measures™ by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in the United States.

The Joint Commission recognizes UPMC Horizon for achieving excellence in performance on its accountability measures during 2011 for heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, and surgical care. The hospital was also named a Top Performer for 2010 for the same measures and is one of only 244 hospitals that achieved the distinction for two years in a row.

Out of the 3,376 hospitals submitting accountability measure data to The Joint Commission, UPMC Horizon was one of only 620 to meet or exceed the target rates of performance for 2011. The list of Top Performers increased by 50 percent from its debut last year and represents 18 percent of eligible accredited hospitals reporting data.

“This recognition is testament to the dedication of our entire staff and our shared commitment to giving our patients the best care possible. This is a wonderful acknowledgement of the hard work each member of our staff puts forth to deliver safe, effective, and high quality care at UPMC Horizon,” said Don Owrey, FACHE, UPMC Horizon president.

UPMC Horizon met the following criteria for recognition of its achievement:

  • Achieved performance of 95 percent or above on a single, composite score that includes all the accountability measures for which it reports data to The Joint Commission, including measures that had fewer than 30 eligible cases or patients
  • Met a 95 percent performance threshold for every accountability measure for which it reports data to The Joint Commission, excluding measures with fewer than 30 eligible cases or patients

A 95 percent score means a hospital provided an evidence-based practice 95 times out of 100 opportunities to provide the practice. Each accountability measure represents an evidence-based practice (such as giving aspirin at arrival for heart attack patients and giving antibiotics one hour before surgery).

In addition to being included in today’s release of The Joint Commission’s “Improving America’s Hospitals” annual report, UPMC Horizon will be recognized on The Joint Commission’s Quality Check web site, www.qualitycheck.org. The Top Performer program will be featured in the October issues of The Joint Commission Perspectives and The Joint Commission: The Source.
