Medical Equipment Recycling Program Receives Grants
FARRELL AND GREENVILLE, April 15, 2013– The UPMC Horizon Community Health Foundation recently received three grants from local foundations in support of its Medical Equipment Recycling Program (MERP).
The grants include:
- $3,500 from the PNC Foundation to support increased program costs due to MERP’s recent expansion into the Greenville area. The Greenville facility, located across the street from UPMC Horizon’s Greenville campus, offers a more convenient location for those who live in northern Mercer County. MERP’s Greenville office loaned 88 pieces of equipment to 59 recipients in 2011. The following year brought a 40 percent increase in the number of MERP recipients who used the Greenville office. In 2012, MERP loaned 332 pieces of equipment out of the Greenville location to 240 individuals. Bob Piccirilli, vice president/branch manager with PNC, recently presented a check to Jackie Bonier, executive director of the UPMC Horizon Community Health Foundation.
- $10,000 from the Community Foundation of Western Pennsylvania and Northeast Ohio, also to support expansion into Greenville.
- $5,000 from the Almira Foundation to support the costs of program expansion into Lawrence County. Disability Options Network collaborates with MERP by referring clients from the Lawrence County area. In 2012, 8.9 percent of MERP recipients (95 out of 1,064) were Lawrence County residents, an increase from 7.7 percent in 2011. Out of those 95 individuals, only five people had used the program previously. In 2011, only 59 of 762 recipients from Lawrence County had used the program; four of them were repeat recipients. Based on 2011 and 2012 statistics, MERP anticipates assisting more than 135 individuals from Lawrence County in 2013. Almira Foundation Board Chair Janie Richards recently presented a check to Cindy Hanna, MERP coordinator, and Jason Hilton and Mike Matthews from Disability Options Network.
MERP, a project funded by the UPMC Horizon Community Health Foundation, provides refurbished medical equipment to people in UPMC Horizon's service area who lack the insurance coverage or means to buy new medical equipment. The program accepts donations of used medical equipment including wheelchairs, canes, lift chairs, hospital beds, and bathing and shower equipment.
