UPMC Horizon Medical Staff Awards Medical Education Scholarships

FARRELL AND GREENVILLE, June 11, 2012– The UPMC Horizon Medical Staff Scholarship Trustees have awarded a total of $12,000 in scholarships to six medical students from Crawford, Lawrence, Mercer and Trumbull Counties. This year’s recipients are:
 
Jordon Bonier, a third-year medical student at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine at Seton Hill, Greensburg, Pa., and son of Jerome Bonier, DO and Jacqueline Bonier of Hermitage. Jordon is a 2006 graduate of Hickory High School and graduated from Ohio State University in 2010 with a degree in molecular genetics. His interests include orthopedic surgery and sports medicine as well as playing guitar, competitive sports and community service. Jordon also received a UPMC Horizon Medical Staff Scholarship in 2011.
 
Megan Ferderber, a fourth-year medical student at Pennsylvania State University – College of Medicine, Hershey, Pa., and daughter of Scott and Virginia Ferderber of Grove City.  Megan graduated from Grove City Area High School in 2005 and Washington and Jefferson College in 2009 with a degree in Spanish and cell and molecular biology. Her interests include serving the underserved and sports medicine, as well as playing soccer, salsa dancing, and music. 
 
Michael Forte, a second-year medical student at Northeast Ohio Medical University and son of Alex and Bridget Forte of Hubbard. Michael is a 2009 graduate of Ursuline High School and graduated from Kent State University in 2011 with a degree in integrated life sciences. He is interested in family medicine as well as faith, golf, intramural sports, and volunteering. 
 
Jeremy Gebhart, a fourth-year medical student at Case Western Reserve University and son of W. John and Patricia Gebhart of New Castle. Jeremy is a 2005 graduate of Mohawk Jr. /Sr. High School and a 2009 graduate of Slippery Rock University, where he earned a degree in exercise science. His interests include orthopedic surgery, sports medicine, exercise, the outdoors and intramural sports. Jeremy, who also received a UPMC Horizon Medical Staff Scholarship last year, is slated to complete a rotation at UPMC Horizon in 2012.
 
Teagan Hayes, a fourth-year medical student at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, Erie, and daughter of Timothy and Marcia Riggs of Meadville. Teagan is a 2004 graduate of Meadville Area Jr. /Sr. High School and graduated from Clarion University of Pennsylvania in 2008 with a degree in molecular biology/biotechnology. She is interested in internal medicine, community service, and women’s health. Her hobbies include weightlifting, participating in cross country races, and outdoor activities such as boating, camping and hiking.
 
Maryann Wozniak, a fourth-year medical student at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, Erie, and daughter of Henry and Anna Wozniak of Phillipsburg, N.J. Maryann is a 2002 graduate of Phillipsburg High School and a 2006 graduate of Rutgers University, where she earned a degree in biological sciences. Her interests include medical research, a variety of voluntary activities through LECOM and in the community, and athletic activities.  She completed an internal medicine rotation at UPMC Horizon last fall and received a UPMC Horizon Medical Staff Scholarship in 2011.
 
The UPMC Horizon medical staff provides funding for the scholarships. Trustees of the UPMC Horizon Medical Staff Scholarship Trust Fund are Jeffrey Bedlion, MD, Mathew Bee, MD (chairperson), and Kirk Works, MD.
 
Annual UPMC Horizon Medical Staff scholarships are open to medical students from the areas served by UPMC Horizon. Specific eligibility criteria and applications can be obtained by contacting UPMC Horizon Medical Staff Services at 724-589-6224.
