Metabolic Medicine at UPMC Horizon
The Metabolic Medicine Program, a collaboration between UPMC Horizon and Primary Health Network's Complementary and Integrative Medicine Center, offers a comprehensive approach to treating patients with metabolic syndrome and related disorders including diabetes, hypertension, and obesity.
Metabolic syndrome is a collection of risk factors that make a patient more susceptible to heart disease, stroke, chronic kidney disease, and type 2 diabetes.
Some of these risk factors include hypertension (high blood pressure), obesity, high blood lipid levels, and insulin resistance (high blood sugar).
Treatment of metabolic syndrome includes lifestyle modification, particularly weight reduction. Medication may also be used to treat metabolic syndrome.
