Endometriosis

At the Center for Fertility and Reproductive Endocrinology (CFRE), we provide diagnosis and treatment options for endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a condition that occurs when endometrial tissue, (tissue that normally grows within the uterine cavity),   is found outside the uterine cavity.  This displaced endometrial tissue can grow and cause irritation in the pelvis that may lead to pain and infertility. It is not clear why some women develop endometriosis.

Women with endometriosis usually experience pain. This pain can be before or during monthly periods, between monthly periods, during or after sexual intercourse, or when urinating or having a bowel movement.

Additionally, some woman with endometriosis also experience infertility.  A direct relation between endometriosis and decreased fertility has not been proven. Endometriosis can cause pelvic adhesions which can prevent the release of eggs, block sperm entry into the fallopian tubes, and interfere with fallopian tube pick-up of ovulated eggs. It should be said, that not all women who have endometriosis are infertile.

At present, there are no diagnostic tests for endometriosis, although symptoms and certain findings on a pelvic examination may lead your physician to suspect endometriosis. The only way to determine if a woman has endometriosis is to perform surgery to look for endometrial tissue outside the uterus.

The treatment options for endometriosis depend primarily on whether a woman’s symptoms and desire to have children in the future.

Here at CFRE we offer medical as well as surgical management for endometriosis.
