Researchers and Educators

UPMC‘s Division of Geriatric Medicine is designated a National Center of Excellence by the John Hartford Foundation of New York and UPMC is ranked among the country’s top 10 in geriatrics by U.S. News & World Report. In addition to providing outstanding clinical care, our experts are also committed to excellence in geriatric research and training.

Our research focuses on conditions that are common, cause problems for seniors, and have been little investigated. Our studies have led to improved understanding of their causes and to new ways to treat them. This research has been recognized by prestigious awards and has contributed to the university’s being among the nation’s top recipients of NIH funding in aging research. But, most importantly, it means that our patients can benefit from the latest research.

To ensure that as many healthcare professionals as possible can get trained in aging, we educate trainees at every level, from medical students to practicing physicians. We also teach trainees in pharmacy, nursing, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, psychology, chaplaincy, physical/occupational therapy, and social work.
