Volunteering at UPMC Northwest
UPMC Northwest is looking for volunteers who desire to be of service, have compassionate hearts, and who will support us in carrying on our mission of compassionate care for the sick and suffering.
Volunteers include adults who may be retirees, homemakers, businesspeople, parents, and grandparents — anyone with talents to share. Weekday, morning, and afternoon shifts are open. College students also are welcome.

Volunteer Requirements at UPMC Northwest
- Must be 16 years of age or older.
- Attend orientation where a volunteer coordinator will match your interests and schedule with the hospital's needs.
- Submit required paperwork provided by Volunteer Coordinator.
- Have a valid Social Security Number.
Volunteer Opportunities at UPMC Northwest
See below for some of the ways you can volunteer to help patients, families, and UPMC staff.
Not all opportunities listed are available at all times. Opportunities will be discussed in further detail during the interview process.
Volunteers hold and rock babies who are having withdrawal after being born to mothers who used heroin or other opioids during pregnancy.
Cuddling helps babies feel more comfortable and less irritable through human touch. The Cuddler also plays an important role as a substitute parent for parents who cannot be with their baby 24/7.
Note: The Cuddler Program is one of the most popular volunteer programs. Applicants may be placed on a waiting list.
Greeter/Information Desk Receptionist
Volunteers greet and help visitors and families find their way throughout the hospital.
Volunteers can becoming a part of our Healing Notes program where they can play music for patients, families, and staff throughout our facilities.
Nursing Unit Volunteers will assist in various ways including checking in on patients, restocking medical supplies, providing comfort items to families and patients, etc.
Trained and certified Pet Therapy animals and their owners visit patients and staff throughout the hospital. Our Pet Therapy dogs always bring a smile to everyone who sees them!
