​Post-Acute Rehabilitation

UPMC Northwest's broad range of services includes post-acute services with a transitional care unit, an inpatient rehabilitation unit, and outpatient rehabilitation.

Our goal is to return you to your prior level of functionality, before your illness or injury, so you can enjoy everyday life once again.

Transitional Care Unit

• A 16-bed, short-term skilled unit located adjacent to the hospital.
• Provides therapy services and IV antibiotics.
• Monitors your walking, eating, fluids intake, and symptom improvement.
• Able to care for more medically complex issues, such as tracheotomies and feeding tubes.
• Typically treat older individuals recovering from pneumonia or surgery, and postoperative knee and hip surgery cases.
• Can be a bridge to inpatient rehabilitation if you cannot tolerate three hours of therapy a day.

UPMC Rehabilitation Institute At UPMC Northwest

• A nine-bed, private room, inpatient rehabilitation unit.
• Part of the UPMC Rehabilitation Network, the largest in western Pennsylvania.
• Comprehensive rehabilitation care for a variety of conditions, including stroke, neurologic disorders, orthopaedic problems, and general debilitation.
• Specialized equipment and facilities, including an activities of daily living apartment, therapy gym, and communal dining room.
• A recipient of The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval^® for health care quality and safety.
• Services include treatment by physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists, rehabilitation nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech and language pathology.

Outpatient Rehabilitation

• Highly trained therapists provide physical, occupational, and speech therapy.
• Physical therapy services include treatment for vestibular, orthopaedic, neurologic, and balance issues, as well as musculoskeletal/joint pain and women's health.
• Occupational therapy promotes a safe return to daily activities by:
• Treating conditions such as lymphedema and hand injuries.
• Providing activities of daily living training and adaptive techniques.
• Performing wheelchair and functional capacity evaluations.
• Our speech therapists treat disorders resulting from stroke, head injuries, and neurologic diseases, such as Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis. They perform swallowing evaluations and modified barium swallow studies, and provide treatment for cognitive patients.
