Cardiac Surgery at UPMC Passavant

UPMC On Topic Transcript

Chris Cook, MD

Traditionally many open heart programs have focused on coronary artery bypass grafting as the sole operation that’s performed by many open heart programs. Here at UPMC Passavant we perform a whole host of cardiac operations including aortic and mitral valve replacement, valve repairs, surgery for heart failure, and even minimally invasive procedures.

Benefits of Minimally Invasive Surgery

Minimally invasive surgical techniques are being employed at UPMC Passavant for the goals of being able to return the patient back to their normal life as quickly as possible. People take time off from work, from their families, and from their normal activities and want to get back to those as quickly as they can. Minimally invasive techniques avoid cutting the bone and are able to help those patients return back to their usual activities much faster.

Multidisciplinary Team

Here at UPMC Passavant we have a Heart and Vascular Institute made up of cardiac surgeons, vascular surgeons, and cardiology. We all collaborate together to meet the patient and come up with the best individualized treatment plan for that patient. Consideration is given preoperatively also intraoperatively and even through that patient’s hospital stay after their procedure with the focus on their rehabilitation and recovery. This includes their physical therapy, dietary, and blood management strategies. Throughout this process we also involve the patient’s primary care providers and other consultants that have been involved in that patient’s care before the time of their procedure.

State-of-the-Art Facility

So UPMC Passavant is really a state-of-the-art facility that has recently been updated as far as imaging capabilities, operating rooms, and even patient rooms. Patients are able to get high level tertiary care within their community. That offers the advantage of being close to home, family accessibility, as well as being cared for by their primary care providers and consultants that have been involved with their care right up until the time of the operation.

High-Quality Care In Your Own Community

As part of the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute, UPMC Passavant is able to provide the same quality of high level care right here in our own community.
