​Neil Y. Van Horn Pavilion & Helen and Miles Colwell Garden of Hope

The 4,700-square-foot Neil Y. Van Horn Pavilion and Garden of Hope at UPMC St. Margaret offers patients and family members a calm escape from the bedside where they can read and relax. This concept was initiated by the St. Margaret Foundation.

“St. Margaret Foundation’s motto is, ‘Filling in the gaps with hope’,” said Mary Lee Gannon, president of St. Margaret Foundation. “Our donors came forward in support of these projects because they wanted to provide hope and resources to our patients, some of whom are facing the most difficult challenges of their lives.”

Amenities

Amenities offered in the Neil Y. Van Horn Pavilion and Helen and Miles Colwell Garden of Hope include:

  • A medical library containing free health information and resources, with the oversight of a medical librarian.
  • An electronic resource center with access to computers, fax services, printers, and cell phone chargers.
  • A garden providing a serene, natural environment.

“The main goal of our new pavilion and garden is to enhance the patient and family experience at UPMC St. Margaret,” said Terri Petrick, president, UPMC St. Margaret. “We want to provide comfort and resources to make a stressful, anxious time for so many, a little easier.”

Fundraising

Named for the hospital's chairman of the board and St. Margaret Foundation board member, the $2.5 million pavilion will be located at the hospital entrance on Delafield Road, and will be open to the general public. Funds for the construction were raised by the St. Margaret Foundation, with half contributed by UPMC St. Margaret.

Major donors included:

  • S&T Bank (family center)
  • Martha Mack Lewis Foundation (library)

The total cost of the Garden of Hope will be funded by donations, with a lead gift from the estate of Helen Colwell.

Local garden club members, who are also part of the St. Margaret Foundation’s Community Advisory Board, have taken an active role in the design and planning.

“We are grateful for the support from our community as we look forward to providing another resource to positively impact the health and wellness of its members,” said John Lagnese, MD, vice president, Medical Affairs, UPMC St. Margaret.

The Neil Y. Van Horn Pavilion was designed by Stantec Inc.
