On the Day Before Surgery
- Do not eat or drink after midnight. This includes chewing gum, breath mints, and water.
- If you are on diabetes medication, be sure to check with your doctor regarding adjustments in your dosage prior to surgery.
- Bathe or shower. Do not shave the operative area. Hair removal may be done the day of your procedure to decrease infection risk.
- Remove nail polish. You may be asked to remove artificial nails.
- Do not use hair spray or hair gel 24 hours prior to surgery.
- Avoid alcoholic beverages 24 hours prior to surgery.
- Do not smoke or chew tobacco 24 hours prior to surgery.
- Call your surgeon if you develop a cough, cold, fever, or other flu-like symptoms.
- Be sure to follow any home preparation prescriptions, such as bowel preparations or an antimicrobial cleansing.
- A nurse will notify you of any changes in your arrival time.
- Make arrangements for a responsible family member or other adult to drive you home and stay with you 24 hours after surgery.
- Please have your family or visitor(s) consider other arrangements for children while waiting during your surgery.
- As hospital temperatures may vary, have your family or visitor(s) bring a sweater or jacket with them for while they wait.
