Horizon Affiliates with UPMC
PITTSBURGH, April 15, 1996 — The board of trustees of Horizon Hospital System at its meeting on Thursday, April 11, 1996 approved an affiliation agreement with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).
"By linking the largest hospital system in Pittsburgh with the largest hospital in Mercer county, this is indeed a significant day in the region's health care history," said J. Larry Heinike, president and chief executive officer of Horizon Hospital System. "The Horizon board's action will directly link the expertise, technology and advanced clinical services of this internationally renowned Pittsburgh medical center to the patients who utilize Horizon for their health care needs," he emphasized.
"We are pleased to affiliate with such a fine health care provider as Horizon Hospital System," said John Paul, UPMC executive vice president. "Horizon will become part of our comprehensive regional health care delivery system that provides cost effective services across a wide geographic area," he added.
Under the affiliation agreement, Horizon's physicians will have direct access to UPMC clinical services while working with UPMC to develop new programs in such areas as neurosurgery, psychiatry and rheumatology. Horizon and UPMC will also cooperate in such areas as recruitment of primary care physicians and specialists and in the provision of internship and residency programs. Horizon Hospital System and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center will remain separate institutions.
Since 1993 Horizon has been affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) as a clinical site. The latest treatment protocols for various cancer diagnoses are administered to patients at Horizon under the direction of UPCI. More recently, Horizon became the new home for one of the Center for Emergency Medicine's STAT MedEvac helicopters, of which UPMC is a primary shareholder. STAT MedEvac is the largest medical transport system in Western Pa.
Horizon Hospital System has been and will continue to be a leading member of the Vantage Health Care Network, a consortium of northwestern Pennsylvania hospitals which includes Meadville Medical Center, Millcreek Community Hospital, Northwest Medical Center, Saint Vincent Health Center in Erie, Titusville Hospital and Warren General Hospital in Warren, Pa.
Horizon Hospital System is Mercer County's largest health care provider, established following the merger of Greenville Regional Hospital and Shenango Valley Medical Center in April 1992. Horizon ranks among the top five hospitals in Pennsylvania for total joint procedures and is known throughout the Mid-Atlantic region as a major orthopedic center. Horizon offers programs of clinical expertise in primary care medicine, cardiology and oncology services, ophthalmology services and sleep medicine.
