Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Reach Agreement on Hospital Contracts

Pittsburgh, PA, June 26, 2002 — Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center have reached an agreement in principle for the commercial and Security Blue hospital contracts which are scheduled to expire June 30.

Both parties acknowledge that the details still need to be finalized and contracts executed. They are optimistic that a final resolution will occur within two or three weeks. Once that occurs, additional information about the hospital contracts will be released.

Current discussions include long-term access to UPMC facilities for Highmark members and opportunities for the two parties to work together on some joint health care initiatives that will benefit members of the community.
