Executive Director of Pitt Diabetes Institute is Elected V.P. of International Diabetes Federation

PITTSBURGH, September 22, 2003 Linda M. Siminerio, R.N., Ph.D., executive director of the University of Pittsburgh Diabetes Institute, has been elected vice president for the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). As vice president she will lead worldwide education efforts in the prevention and treatment of diabetes.

The IDF, headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, is a non-governmental organization that works with the World Health Organization (WHO) and IDF member associations to enhance the lives of people with diabetes. It is the only global advocate for people with diabetes and their health care providers. The Federation has 181 member associations in over 132 countries.

Dr. Siminerio, who is assistant professor in the schools of Medicine and Nursing at the University of Pittsburgh, has been executive director of the University of Pittsburgh Diabetes Institute since 1999. Prior to that, she was coordinator of the diabetes education program clinic at Childrens Hospital of Pittsburgh for more than 20 years and has been involved with numerous research studies and publications related to diabetes.

Dr. Siminerio is a past senior vice president of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and has served on numerous ADA committees and its local and national boards of directors. She serves as editor of the ADAs leading patient publication, Diabetes Forecast. She also is a member of the board of management of the IDF.

The University of Pittsburgh Diabetes Institute integrates diabetes care and education, measures diabetes outcomes, targets disease management strategies and resources, and conducts diabetes-related research.
