Bishop Zubik to Celebrate Mass for World Day of the Sick at UPMC Mercy

PITTSBURGH, January 26, 2009 — The Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh and UPMC Mercy invite the public to attend a Eucharistic Liturgy celebrated by Most Reverend David A. Zubik, Bishop of Pittsburgh, in observance of the 17th annual World Day of the Sick. A special Mass will be celebrated at 12 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 11 in the Holy Family Chapel, first floor, Building D, UPMC Mercy, 1400 Locust St., Uptown.
 
Sponsored by the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Health Pastoral Care, World Day of the Sick is a global observance held annually since 1992 on the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. The event is intended to remind the faithful to pray for those who are sick, to pray for the alleviation of human suffering, and to recognize and honor all those who work in health care as well as those who serve as caregivers.
 
“Healing and caring for our sick and suffering brothers and sisters has been a central role of the Church ever since our Lord walked among us. ‘He went around all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and curing every disease and illness among the people,’” (Matthew 4:23) stated Bishop Zubik.
 
“On this 151st anniversary of the appearance of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Lourdes, and the healing she brought to so many through her intercession, it is especially appropriate to invite everyone to pray for the sick, to ask for healing of body, mind and spirit, and to extend our prayers and thanks to all the professionals who dedicate their lives to caring for the sick,” continued Bishop Zubik.
 
“We encourage the public to take this opportunity to pray for the sick, the infirmed and for those who are terminally ill. We also ask for your ongoing prayers for those who dedicate their lives to serving the sick, be they doctors, nurses, therapists or other health care providers. As we all know, it takes a very special individual to care for the sick. We honor these individuals for living our mission and core values of reverence for each person, community, justice, commitment to those who are poor, stewardship, courage and integrity each and every day,” stated Phyllis Grasser, vice president of Mission Integration and Spiritual Care at UPMC Mercy.
