Inflammatory Bowel Disease Expert Joins UPMC South Hills
PITTSBURGH, March 23, 2010 – Arthur M. Barrie, M.D., Ph.D., a new gastroenterologist with UPMC’s Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, has joined UPMC South Hills. Dr. Barrie specializes in the treatment of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
Dr. Barrie received both his medical and doctorate degrees from the University of Cincinnati and conducted his internal medicine residency at Duke University. During his gastroenterology fellowship at Pitt, he received funding from the National Institutes of Health to study the role of the immune system and genetic variations in predisposing patients to Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, the two conditions that make up IBD.
UPMC’s IBD Center is an innovative, internationally renowned program that provides one-stop access to clinicians and researchers who specialize in IBD management. The center pays specific attention to cancer surveillance, women’s health, intestinal rehabilitation and transplantation medicine and provides a transition of care from pediatric to adult gastroenterology.
“Both Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are conditions that need to be managed for the entirety of the patient’s life,” said Miguel D. Regueiro, M.D., clinical director of the UPMC IBD Center. “Having an IBD specialist in the South Hills area means patients with this disease have ongoing, quality care close to home.”
