University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing’s 12th Annual Cameos of Caring® Event Honors Area Nurses

PITTSBURGH, Oct. 6, 2010 – Sixty nurses from 42 area health care facilities, nine schools of nursing and one international facility, will be honored at the 12th annual Cameos of Caring awards gala on Saturday, Nov. 6, at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.

The University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing created the Cameos of Caring awards program in 1999 in response to the nursing shortage. “Two fundamental factors in the nursing shortage are recruitment and retention. The Cameos of Caring program inspires more people to enter the profession by increasing awareness about all of the opportunities available in nursing,” said Jacqueline Dunbar-Jacob, Ph.D., R.N., professor and dean, University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. “In addition, the Cameos of Caring program provides a venue for area hospitals to recognize the profound contributions their nurses make to delivering quality health care.”

Awardees are nominated by their colleagues at each participating hospital in recognition of their impact on the lives of patients, family members and co-workers. To date, Cameos of Caring has honored more than 500 nurses, including this year’s winners.

“Job satisfaction leads to improved retention of nurses and also has a direct correlation to patient satisfaction and improved patient outcomes,” noted Dr. Dunbar-Jacob.

Responding to studies that associate higher levels of nursing education with improved patient outcomes, the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing also established the Cameos of Caring Endowed Nursing Scholarship for registered nurses to continue their education. The Cameos of Caring awards gala has raised more than $800,000 since the fund’s establishment in 2000. This year, 24 Cameos of Caring scholarships will be awarded, bringing the total number of scholarships awarded to 121.
