Individuals with Lower Extremity Amputations Invited to Attend Amputee Walking School at UPMC Rehabilitation Institute
WHAT: The Amputee Walking School is a free, supervised program to help people with lower extremity amputations improve their mobility.
WHO: Local individuals with lower extremity amputations are invited to attend.
Amputee Walking School co-founders and former gold-medal-winning Para-Olympians Todd Schaffhauser and Dennis Oehler will instruct the sessions.
Jaspaal Singh, M.D., a UPMC Rehabilitation Institute physician, and other Institute experts, including physical therapists, will assist participants.
WHEN/WHERE: Participants are welcome to attend one or both of the following sessions:
- 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 13, Clark Auditorium, Side B, UPMC Mercy, 1400 Locust St.
- 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Thursday, April 14, Assembly Hall, UPMC Passavant, 9100 Babcock Blvd.
WHY: People with physical disabilities, including those with leg amputations, have a higher risk of developing or exacerbating health conditions associated with lack of exercise, such as heart disease and diabetes. The Amputee Walking School provides patients with the support, education and inspiration needed to participate in physical fitness. This unique program will evaluate each patient’s prosthesis, gait, balance, spatial orientation and strength, while teaching them how to comfortably and successfully walk and/or run.

These Amputee Walking School sessions are funded in part by the Gridiron Gaming fundraiser hosted annually by the UPMC Rehabilitation Institute. The largest rehab network in the region, the Institute combines clinical care and research to help patients regain independence and enhance their quality of life.
