Celebration of Lights at Hartwood Benefits Local Charities

PITTSBURGH, Nov. 14, 2011 – A popular local charitable holiday tradition continues as Allegheny County partners with UPMC to preserve the annual Celebration of Lights at Hartwood, now in its 20th year.  The spectacular holiday light show, open every night from Nov. 18 through Jan. 8 at Hartwood Acres in Hampton and Indiana Townships, supports WTAE's Project Bundle-Up benefitting the Salvation Army and the Woodlands Foundation.       

“During the past 20 years, the Celebration of Lights has attracted tens of thousands of visitors each year to marvel at its displays,” said Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato. “Although the lights are breathtaking, we should remember the true purpose behind this event. Proceeds from the Celebration of Lights are donated to local charities, and more than $3.7 million has been raised over the years.”

For a donation, people can drive through the hundreds of light displays featuring more than 2 million lights. The suggested donations are:  $12 per car; for buses, $3 per person from non-profit organizations, and $5 per person from for-profit organizations. Donations go to Project Bundle-Up, which provides winter wear for needy children and senior citizens, and to the Woodlands Foundation, which serves children and young people with disabilities and chronic illnesses.

“We are pleased to support the critical work of these charities while partnering with the County to maintain this beautiful tradition enjoyed by so many local residents, out-of-town guests and holiday visitors,” said UPMC Community Relations Vice President Sean Logan.

From Nov. 18 through Jan. 8, the Celebration of Lights will be open Sunday through Thursday, 6 to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 6 to 11 p.m.; and Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, from 6 to 10 p.m. For directions and more information, visit HartwoodCelebrationofLights.com.
