
Pitt School of Medicine to Hold 17th Annual White Coat Ceremony

Why: The White Coat Ceremony is a symbolic event marking the entry of first-year students into the medical profession. At the ceremony, the 148 students of the Class of 2015 will be individually garbed in white clinicians’ coats and publicly declare their commitment to integrity, ethical behavior and honor by reciting the Hippocratic Oath.
The keynote speaker for the event is Susan Dunmire, M.D., (Class of ‘85) executive director of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Alumni Association. Joan Harvey, M.D., associate dean for student affairs, School of Medicine, will present the white coats.
Other presenters include:
John F. Mahoney, M.D., associate dean of medical education, will preside and provide a welcome to the Class of 2015; James Tew, M.D., (Class of ‘01) will lead the class in reciting the Hippocratic Oath; and Melissa McNeil, M.D., (Class of ‘80) will provide the closing remarks. Brian Klatt, M.D., (Class of ’97) assisted by medical student, Alessandra M. Barreiro (Class of ’12), will present each student with a gift.
Coating on stage will be done by: Freddie H. Fu, M.D., (Class of ’77), assisted by medical student Gnankang Napoe (Class of ’12); Kathleen McIntyre-Seltman, M.D., assisted by medical student Ajeet Singh Mehta (Class of ’12); and Jack Schumann, Ph.D., assisted by medical student Phindile Chowa, (Class of ‘12.)
The Medical Alumni Association proudly donates the white coats to the incoming students as they become part of the School of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.
