UPMC Named One of ‘Most Wired’ Hospitals in the United States for 15 Consecutive Years

PITTSBURGH, July 12, 2013 – For the 15th consecutive year, UPMC has been named one of the “Most Wired” health systems in the country, the only one in the nation to achieve that distinction, according to Hospitals & Health Networks, the journal of the American Hospital Association (AHA).

The award recognizes the most technologically advanced hospitals for their efforts to improve patient care and safety.

The results are based on survey responses from 659 hospitals and health systems, representing 1,713 hospitals, or about 30 percent of all U.S. hospitals. The 289 “Most Wired” organizations met specific requirements in each of four areas: infrastructure, business and administrative management, clinical quality and safety, and clinical integration.

“As this survey points out, UPMC has been a leader in laying the technological groundwork to truly transform care—long before recent government mandates. With the commitment of our clinicians and technologists, we are driving toward an era of personalized medicine, delivered to every patient at the right time and in the right place,” said Dan Drawbaugh, chief information officer of UPMC.

Over the past five years, UPMC has invested more than $1.3 billion in technology to support clinical excellence and administrative efficiency. UPMC is one of the nation’s earliest and most sophisticated users of electronic medical records (EMRs). Earlier this year UPMC’s outpatient facilities were recognized by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Analytics for their advanced use of EMRs, a critical component for achieving higher levels of quality, efficiency and safety in patient care. Additionally, more than a dozen UPMC hospitals are at the highest levels of EMR use. UPMC also recently committed $100 million to a multi-year effort to create advanced analytics capabilities across the health system.

The Most Wired awards will be presented at the 2013 Health Forum and AHA Leadership Summit in San Diego, July 25 to 27.
