UPMC to Host Inaugural Patient Symposium on Head and Neck Cancer

WHAT: A multidisciplinary team of specialists at UPMC will host the region’s first survivorship symposium for patients with head and neck cancer in an effort to improve care for this often debilitating disease.
Thanks to early intervention, screening and treatment improvements, more people are surviving  head and neck cancer and living longer, but their care after treatment requires a comprehensive approach, like that provided at the UPMC Head and Neck Survivorship Clinic. The two-day symposium will address the unique needs of these patients.
WHY: Head and neck cancer includes cancers of the mouth, nose, sinuses, salivary glands, throat and lymph nodes in the neck. It often is aggressive, and the treatments can result in disfigurement and lifelong side effects that require multiple physician interventions. Survivorship care focuses on a patient’s individual physical, psychosocial and economic issues that can arise after cancer treatment has ended.
