PITTSBURGH – The UPMC Mercy Burn Center is partnering with fire departments from Homestead, West Homestead and Munhall and Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery to teach residents about fire safety. Firefighters will provide fire safety tips and burn center staff will be on hand to demonstrate such things as “stop, drop and roll,” distribute smoke detectors, educational materials and other giveaways.
Children’s Fire Safety Day events will take place from 4 to 6 p.m., Saturday, April 7, 2018, in the Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery parking lot, 171 E Bridge St., Homestead, Pa., 15120.
According to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, burn injuries continue to be one of the leading causes of unintentional death and injury in the United States. Between 2011 and 2015, approximately 486,000 fire or burn injuries were seen at Emergency Departments across the country. Unintentional fire or burn injuries were the 5th leading cause of injury deaths in 2015 for children age 1 to 4, and the 3rd for those age 5 to 9.
