Michael T. Stang, MD, specializes in the treatment of endocrine tumors, with a focus on cancers of the thyroid gland. Dr. Stang has a special interest in the role of inflammation and the cellular processes that cause benign endocrine tumors to become cancerous. He is active in investigations to discover targeted treatments for endocrine cancers and autoimmune inflammation.
Dr. Stang is an expert in minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques for the treatment of thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. The Division of Endocrine Surgery performs over 1,000 endocrine-related surgeries a year. In the last two years, Dr. Stang has become the most experienced robotic thyroid surgeon in the northeast. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration less than two years ago, robotic thyroid surgery is performed by making a small incision under the arm rather than on the neck, eliminating any visible neck scar while also offering the potential for a less painful recovery and faster healing.
Dr. Stang received his medical training at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska. He performed his general surgery residency and his fellowship in endocrine surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
