St. Francis Cranberry Will Be Purchased by University of Pittsburgh Medical Center

PITTSBURGH, August 15, 2002 — In mid-October, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center will purchase all assets of St. Francis Cranberry. This seamless transition of ownership will unify and enhance health care services in the thriving northern Allegheny County /southern Butler County area.

The 150-bed St. Francis Nursing Center Cranberry will be re-named and become part of UPMC's Senior Living Corporation, this area's largest provider of independent congregant living, assisted-living, and skilled nursing home care for the elderly. Current residents will be able to continue to receive care at the facility. A lease for the independently run dialysis center housed in the ground floor of this facility will continue under UPMC ownership.

St. Francis Hospital Cranberry will be operated by UPMC Passavant. The ambulatory services offered at that facility will continue and expand in response to community need. The 35-bed inpatient facility, currently running at about 20% occupancy, will close and any inpatients in-house at the time of closing will be transferred to UPMC Passavant, approximately ten miles away. The emergency room will continue to operate, with those requiring inpatient care appropriately transferred.

UPMC human resource personnel will meet with all employees at St. Francis Cranberry about ongoing employment at the site or at other UPMC facilities.

The site also includes two professional/medical office buildings that will continue to be leased to physicians.
