UPMC St. Margaret Announces Construction of New Medical Complex on Burtner Road

ASPINWALL, February 27, 2003 — Officials from UPMC St. Margaret today announced that construction will begin next month on a 34,000 sq. ft. two-story medical complex on Burtner Road in Natrona Heights that will house a comprehensive cancer center, outpatient diagnostic imaging services and physician offices.

Working in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, the region’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, the new facility will be a member of the UPMC Cancer Centers network —a group of more than 40 cancer centers throughout the tri-state region that provide community-based delivery of state-of-the-art cancer care including prevention, detection, diagnosis and treatment.

The cancer center will occupy most of the first floor of the new building and will house sophisticated diagnostic and treatment services including medical oncology, outpatient treatment, the latest in imaging and radiation oncology including Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), CT simulation and MRI, as well as cancer education and support services. IMRT is a promising new technology that allows for more precise delivery of radiation to a tumor while sparing nearby normal tissues.

“We are pleased to serve this community and to provide patients from the Alle-Kiski area with the support and care they need to overcome cancer,” said David Martin, president and CEO of UPMC St. Margaret. “This facility will result in greater convenience for patients and their families, while providing exceptional care and the most promising treatments available close to home. This medical complex represents a significant investment in the Valley communities, and it further enhances the level of care that we are able to provide to our patients.”

UPCI oncologists James Lichter, M.D. and Edward Malloy, M.D. will relocate their medical practice to the new center from 3063 Freeport Road. The building’s second floor will house primary care and specialty physician offices. Construction costs are approximately $5.6 million and the facility is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Graziano Construction Company is the project developer and L.D. Astorino Associated is the architect.
