UPMC Health Plan Earns High Ranking from Federal Benefits Program

PITTSBURGH (March 31, 2005)UPMC Health Plan finished second in a ranking of the nation's health maintenance organizations (HMOs) that provide benefits to federal employees. The rankings were based on a composite of Health plan Employer Data and Information Set (HEDIS®) scores for 25 distinct measures that were analyzed by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) in Washington, D.C.

The rankings were determined from HEDIS scores for the more than 100 HMOs in the nation that offer health benefits under the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) Program.

HEDIS is a tool created by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) to collect data about the quality of care and services provided by health plans. HEDIS consists of a set of performance measures that compare how well health plans perform in a number of key areas, including quality of care, access to care, and member satisfaction with the health plan and doctors. As one of the FEHB program's top-rated plans, UPMC Health Plan has been asked to participate in a panel presentation at the 2005 FEHB Carrier Convention, April 4-5 in Washington, D.C. Dr. Michael Culyba, UPMC Health Plan's Vice President of Medical Affairs, will represent the Health Plan at the conference.

More than 20,000 federal employees and their families are members of UPMC Health Plan.

"UPMC Health Plan is proud of its HEDIS scores and proud of the service we deliver to federal employees and to all of our members," said Diane P. Holder, president of UPMC Health Plan. "It's certainly gratifying to be recognized as a plan that delivers quality patient care. But, what's most important is what we did to get that recognition and its impact on the health of the community." Connecticare, an HMO based in Farmington, Conn., finished first in the composite rankings analyzed by OPM.

UPMC Health Plan is a health care benefits company headquartered in Pittsburgh that serves more than 435,000 members with its commercial, Medical Assistance, and Medicare Advantage products. More than 300,000 members have enrolled through one of the Health Plan's 4,700 employer group business partners.
