Special Edition Cheerios Cereal Box will Feature Pitt’s Rory Cooper, Ph.D.

PITTSBURGH, March 4, 2009 — Rory Cooper, Ph.D., director of the Human Engineering Research Laboratories, a partnership between the University of Pittsburgh, UPMC and the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, will appear on a special edition Cheerios box as part of a national campaign organized by the VA, VA Canteen Services and General Mills honoring 12 select gold medal winners of the 28th National Veterans Wheelchair Games. Dr. Cooper is the only Pennsylvania veteran featured in the campaign.

“This campaign offers mainstream recognition for people who have disabilities, and I am excited to be a part of it,” said Dr. Cooper, distinguished professor and FISA – Paralyzed Veterans of America chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Science and Technology at Pitt’s School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, professor of bioengineering at Pitt’s Swanson School of Engineering and a VA Senior Career Scientist. “I am honored to help promote a positive image for our wounded, injured and ill veterans.”

The special edition Cheerios box will be sold exclusively in military markets and VA Canteen Services retail stores. Dr. Cooper will sign the Cheerios boxes this week at the following times at these VA Canteen Services Stores:

  • 10 a.m., Thursday, March 5, VA Medical Center, Oakland
  • 9 a.m., Friday, March 6, VA Medical Center, Highland Drive
  • 5 p.m., Friday, March 6, Heinz VA Medical Center, Aspinwall
