InformationWeek Ranks UPMC on List of Technology Innovators for 10th Consecutive Year

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 14 – For the 10th consecutive year, UPMC  has been listed on the InformationWeek 500—a ranking of the nation’s top technology innovators from across all industries. The honorees were announced at a ceremony Sept. 13 during the annual InformationWeek 500 Conference in Dana Point, Calif.

Ranked at No. 75 this year, UPMC joins such leading companies as Procter & Gamble, FedEx and Wal-Mart Stores on a list that spotlights the power of innovation in information technology rather than simply the amount of IT spending.

“This award honors the entrepreneurial spirit that drives UPMC to look for continuous improvements in every aspect of health care delivery—from care at the patient’s bedside to back-office billing and coding. By putting the right technology into the hands of passionate employees, we can transform the way that health care is delivered,” said UPMC Chief Information Officer Daniel Drawbaugh.

Over the past five years, UPMC has invested more than $1.3 billion in technology to support clinical excellence and administrative efficiency as it creates new models of accountable care. UPMC is one of the nation’s earliest and most sophisticated users of electronic medical records (EMRs). Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC in 2009 was the first pediatric facility in the nation to achieve Health Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Stage 7 status for its virtually paperless environment and the most comprehensive use of EMRs, while seven other UPMC hospitals are Stage 6. UPMC also has been named one of the “Most Wired” health systems in the country for 13 consecutive years, the only organization to earn that distinction from Hospitals & Health Networks, the journal of the American Hospital Association.

UPMC earned its InformationWeek 500 ranking in part for its recent creation of the Technology Development Center (TDC), a research and development arm that aims to build the next generation of health care information technology while acting as a catalyst for economic development in the region. Working with such partners as Alcatel-Lucent and Nuance Communications, the TDC is developing technology that will turn the vast quantity of data collected by health care providers into meaningful, actionable intelligence that benefits patients and clinicians.

“For 23 years, the InformationWeek 500 has chronicled and honored the most innovative users of business technology,” said InformationWeek Editor in Chief Rob Preston. “In this day and age, however, being innovative isn’t enough. Companies and their IT organizations need to innovate faster than ever before to stay a step or two ahead of their customers, partners and competitors. This year’s ranking placed special emphasis on those high-octane technology innovators.”
