UPMC Mercy Burn Center Celebrates 45th Anniversary and ABA Verification
Jenny Ziembicki, M.D., Appointed Medical Director
PITTSBURGH, March 21, 2011 – As UPMC Mercy marks its 45th anniversary as a burn center and its 25th anniversary as a Level I Regional Resource Trauma Center, the Gertrude P. and Donald C.W. Birmingham Trauma and Burn Center has earned verification from the American Burn Association (ABA). In addition Jenny Ziembicki, M.D., has been appointed medical director of the center.
The ABA verification process is a joint program between the ABA and the American College of Surgeons. A rigorous review program, it is designed to verify a burn center’s resources required for the provision of optimal care to burn patients from the time of injury through rehabilitation. The combination of burn and trauma care services gives UPMC Mercy the unique ability to care for the most critically ill and injured patients. The Gertrude P. and Donald C.W. Birmingham Trauma and Burn Center is Pennsylvania’s first burn center and one of only seven in the state to be verified.
“UPMC Mercy has a rich history of providing exceptional care to burn patients. Since integrating with UPMC, we now have the resources required to seek ABA verification, which solidifies UPMC Mercy’s ongoing commitment to providing western Pennsylvania with the specialized care that burn patients require and deserve,” said Tom Gronow, executive director, Emergency, Trauma and Burn Services at UPMC Mercy.
Trauma surgeons qualified in the treatment of adult multi-system trauma and burn care for patients of all ages, as well as a nursing staff specially credentialed in advanced burn care, are pivotal in making UPMC Mercy the only center in western Pennsylvania to have an Adult Level I trauma center and a comprehensive burn center under one roof.
Jenny Ziembicki, M.D., came to UPMC Mercy in 2008. She received her medical degree at Temple University and completed her general surgery residency at the University Hospitals of Cleveland/Case Western Reserve University. She completed a trauma/burn and surgical critical care fellowship at Metro Health Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Ziembicki is taking over the position formerly held by Alain Corcos, M.D., who now is the medical director of the Division of Multisystem Trauma at UPMC Mercy.
“I look forward to my role as medical director and my part on the vital, life-saving team of the UPMC Mercy Trauma and Burn Center,” said Dr. Ziembicki.
