UPMC Mercy Marks Burn Awareness Week with Annual Burn Survivor Sunday Celebration
WHAT: “Burn Survivor Sunday: A Celebration of Survival,” now in its 17th year, is an event which allows UPMC Mercy burn survivors to reunite and celebrate their survival with members of their care team, including doctors and nurses. For many, the event is a lesson in endurance and the triumph of the human spirit.
The celebration will include face painting, a balloon artist, story time and lunch. In addition, the newly acquired VECTA® Distraction Station will be on display. Purchased with money raised during the Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery fundraising events last year, this machine creates multisensory environments that can soothe and relax patients as well as divert their attention during difficult procedures. Features include an interactive bubble column with color buttons, allowing patients to control the colors of the bubbles, a projector that uses various effects wheels to project a rotating image on the wall or ceiling, a CD player and an aromatherapy unit.

WHY: National Burn Awareness Week 2011 is Feb. 6 through 12. Burn Survivor Sunday has been held annually at UPMC Mercy since 1994. The combination of burn and trauma care services under one roof gives UPMC Mercy the unique ability to care for the most critically ill and injured patients.
