WHY: Advance care planning involves making decisions about the type of medical care a person would want, and who will make decisions for them, if they become unable to speak for themselves. Many people put off having this important discussion with loved ones because they feel uncomfortable talking about such serious matters and can also be frightened about having to make these decisions. But doing so can provide peace of mind to you and your loved ones.

National Healthcare Decisions Day is April 16. In addition to the community forums, UPMC is planning several events for its employees to encourage them to think about advance care planning. They include inservices to discuss end-of-life care, information tables set up at UPMC facilities with information on advance care planning and complimentary copies of Five Wishes, an advance care planning tool.

Note to media: To cover any of these events, contact Jennifer C. Yates at 412-647-9966 or
