Four Prominent Orthopaedic Surgeons Return to UPMC   

PITTSBURGH, Oct. 11, 2012 – Four prominent orthopaedic surgeons from the Allegheny Specialty Practice Network will leave their practice and association with the West Penn Allegheny Health System to come back to UPMC effective Jan. 1, 2013.  These physicians completed surgical specialty training at UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine early in their careers, and will rejoin the health system as employed physicians of UPMC within the new practice group, Orthopaedic Specialists—UPMC.
The physicians – Mark E. Baratz, M.D., Alan H. Klein, M.D., Christopher C. Schmidt, M.D., and Dean G. Sotereanos, M.D. – all are board-certified in orthopaedic surgery.  Dr. Baratz specializes in hand and upper extremity surgery with expertise in carpal tunnel syndrome, as well as elbow and shoulder conditions. Dr. Klein is a general orthopaedic surgeon with interest in anterior cruciate ligament injuries, hip and knee replacement, and foot and ankle injuries.  Dr. Schmidt focuses on hand and upper extremity surgery with expertise in arthritis management, carpal tunnel syndrome, joint replacement , rotator cuff repair and shoulder conditions.  Dr. Sotereanos is known for his surgical expertise in treating hand, elbow and carpal tunnel conditions as well as shoulder and joint ailments.  For more information about Orthopaedic Specialists—UPMC, visit To reach Orthopaedic Specialists—UPMC, call 1-877-471-0935.
