Pitt Cancer Institute Wraps Up High School Summer Academy

WHAT: University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute High School Summer Academy Closing Ceremony and Research Project Oral Presentations
  • Michael T. Lotze, M.D., vice chairman, Department of Surgery with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI), and  Doris Duke Academy for Clinical Research program director
  • Principal investigators from laboratory programs throughout the University of Pittsburgh, including the Magee-Womens Research Institute, the Department of Biomedical Informatics and Computational and Systems Biology and the Hillman Cancer Center
  • Graduating students who will present posters and lead oral discussions covering research they conducted over the summer, including an examination of how psychological stress impacts the efficacy of chemotherapy treatments, further understanding of the origin of triple negative breast cancers and an exploration between endometriosis and ovarian cancer
WHEN: Closing Ceremony and oral presentations in the Herberman Conference Center on Friday, Aug. 10 at 9 a.m.; Poster presentations can be viewed in the Hillman Cancer Center on Friday, Aug. 10 from 2 to 5 p.m.

WHY: Now completing its fourth summer, the University of Pittsburgh’s High School Summer Academy offers students the opportunity to work one-on-one with a senior cancer researcher in a laboratory or clinical setting.  Rising high school seniors developed a research project under the mentorship of senior researchers. The three sites participating in the UPCI Summer Academy are the Hillman Cancer Center in Shadyside, the Department of Biomedical Informatics and Computational and Systems Biology in Oakland and the Magee-Womens Cancer Research Center in Oakland.
