Pitt Receives Center of Excellence in Pain Education Designation from NIH

PITTSBURGH, May 24, 2012 – The University of Pittsburgh has been recognized as a Center of Excellence in Pain Education by the National Institutes of Health Pain Consortium, one of only 11 schools chosen nationally for the designation.

The center will act as a hub for the development, evaluation and distribution of pain management curriculum resources for schools of the health sciences to improve how health care professionals are taught about pain and its treatment.

More than 20 faculty within Pitt’s schools of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Dental Medicine and Health and Rehabilitation Sciences will work to develop curricula for pre-professional students to advance the assessment, diagnosis and safe treatment of a wide variety of pain conditions.

“Because primary care providers are on the front line of pain management, we chose to target the center’s educational efforts on problems that are commonly encountered in the primary care setting, such as low back pain, fibromyalgia and headaches,” said Debra Weiner, M.D., director of the center and professor of medicine within the Division of Geriatric Medicine.

“We recognize the importance of educating students about pain. This opportunity to develop education resources and to collaborate with other centers across the country represents an important step in improving the quality of care for millions of Americans suffering from pain,” said Dr. Weiner.
