Shoeshiner and Philanthropist Albert Lexie to Retire After Raising More Than $202,000 for the Free Care Fund at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC
WHO: Albert Lexie, of Monessen, who has been shining shoes at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC for more than three decades, will retire this month. His last day will be Tuesday, Dec. 17.
Staff and families will gather briefly to say goodbye to Albert in the Eat’n Park Atrium starting at approximately 4 p.m. A retirement party is being planned for early next year.
WHAT: Albert Lexie has committed his life to raising money for the Free Care Fund at Children’s Hospital by donating all the tips he earns from his one-man shoeshine business to help ensure no children from the region go without the care they need.
Since he started in 1981, Albert has raised more than $202,000 for the Free Care Fund, which ensures that all children from this region receive care at Children’s, regardless of a family’s ability to pay or insurance status.
Albert has received several awards over the decades for his years of charity work, including being honored as one of 30 “All Stars Among Us” at the 2010 Major League Baseball Game in People magazine, which recognizes individuals who are serving the community in extraordinary ways. He also received the 2006 National Caring Award given by the Caring Institute, and inducted into the Hall of Fame for Caring Americans. In addition, he also has appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” “The Jane Pauley Show,” and the “CBS Evening News,” among many others.
