Lions Clubs Work With UPMC to Distribute Recycled Eyeglasses to the Needy

WHAT: The Lions Clubs of Pittsburgh, in collaboration with several members of the UPMC Physician Services Division Green Team, will sort through 1,200 glasses for distribution around the world to those in need
WHO: Lion’s Clubs of Pittsburgh members, UPMC Physician Services Green Team members Jake Voelker, Shane Brennan, and Kelly Wilson, 42 student members from University of Pittsburgh Lions
WHEN: 10 a.m. to Noon, Tuesday, April 16
WHERE: William Pitt Union, University of Pittsburgh, 4200 Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15213
WHY: In an effort to eliminate blindness and improve overall ocular health, the Lion’s Clubs of Pittsburgh have placed glasses collection boxes at more than 60 UPMC medical facilities throughout the region and hopes to expand that to 200 UPMC locations to complete the campaign.
The Lions Clubs’ efforts likely will total more than 1,200 pairs of glasses that need to be cleaned, labeled with prescriptions, and distributed all over the world.  One country in particular in need of the glasses is Honduras.
Currently, there are 12 eye glasses recycling centers in the U.S. The closest distribution centers are located in New Jersey, Indiana, and Virginia. Lions Clubs International aims to have recycling centers in every state in the country and around the world.
The Lions Clubs of Pittsburgh are currently in the process of acquiring its own distribution center. Having a recycling center would give the Lion’s Clubs the ability to more quickly and efficiently sort, label, and process the glasses for distribution to the visually impaired around the globe.
