2014 U.S. Paralympians, Military Vets Compete in Sled-Hockey Championships Co-Sponsored by UPMC

WHAT:  The USA Hockey Sled Classic championships presented by the NHL, and sponsored in part by the UPMC Rehabilitation Institute, is bringing 16 teams to Pittsburgh from Thursday to Sunday to play championships in three divisions. Fifteen members of Team USA participating in the 2014 Paralympics in March in Sochi, Russia, will be competing on various teams here and are scheduled to meet and greet fans from 5 to 7 p.m., Saturday, at the RMU Island Sports Center. 

WHY:  Sled hockey is a fast-paced, enthralling sport that allows the able-bodied to compete alongside athletes with disabilities. It is one of only five Paralympics sports to be featured at Sochi and televised by NBC.


  • Dan McCoy, a University of Pittsburgh student from Fox Chapel, is a member of Team USA and a star on the host-team Mighty Penguins representing the Pittsburgh Penguins.
  • Lee Tempest, a Mighty Penguins player, is a researcher at the Pitt/UPMC Model Center on Spinal Cord Injury and co-director of the Spinal Cord Injury Peer Support Group at the UPMC Rehabilitation Institute.
  • Two teams of military veterans with disabilities will compete in the tournament, which separates teams into representatives of NHL clubs: Penguins, Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Florida Panthers, Philadelphia Flyers (A Division); Sabres, Columbus Blue Jackets, New York Rangers, Washington Capitals (B Division); and Sabres, Carolina Hurricanes, Los Angeles Kings and Nashville Predators (C Division).  Dallas, Philadelphia and Colorado won the three previous championships.




  • Games start at 7:30 p.m., this evening, at Harmarville (featuring the Mighty Penguins)
  • The A Division Championship game is 1:15 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 24, at Consol Energy Center
