UPMC East Earns Accreditation for Elective Angioplasty

PITTSBURGH, Aug. 13, 2014 – To meet a growing community need, UPMC East has received accreditation from Accreditation for Cardiovascular Excellence (ACE), a national, independent organization that evaluates and monitors facilities that provide cardiac care. Coordinated with the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the accreditation enables the Heart and Vascular Institute at UPMC East to begin offering elective angioplasty, a procedure to clear blockages in the heart vessels.
“While coronary angioplasty has been done on an emergency basis at UPMC East since the hospital’s 2012 opening, the ACE accreditation will bring elective catheter-based coronary interventions to East so that patients from this community don't have to go too far to get timely treatment from experienced UPMC cardiologists,” said Abdulrab Aziz, M.D., chief of cardiology at UPMC East.
ACE accreditation recognizes UPMC East for maintaining high standards set by experts in cardiac care.
“It is our mission to ensure our patient’s access to internationally acclaimed experts, as well as life-saving technology,” added Dr. Aziz. “This accreditation highlights the capabilities and experience of our cardiology team.”
UPMC East is now offering elective angioplasty services to patients.
“People do not want to travel when they need medical treatment. They want to receive great care close to home. This program is another example of UPMC East leadership’s commitment to work with our physicians to provide the world-class care people in this region have come to expect,” said Mark Sevco, president, UPMC East.
