New Rash, But No Time? UPMC’s eDermatology Allows Access to Dermatologists Anywhere, Anytime

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 3, 2015 – Patients worried about an irritating skin condition who don’t have time to see their dermatologists have a new option to get help. The eDermatology platform developed by western Pennsylvania’s only academic dermatology program now allows patients to submit their symptoms and photos online and quickly receive a diagnosis, treatment plan and medication orders.
UPMC’s eDermatology, part of the health network’s UPMC AnywhereCare Web-based service for treating a variety of medical conditions, allows patients access to board-certified, fellowship-trained dermatologists who care for all skin conditions and disorders in adults and children.
“This platform is easy to use and inexpensive and gives patients access to our world-class care. We believe it will be a time saver for patients, while enabling them to get the timely and expert help they need,” said Louis D. Falo, Jr., M.D., Ph.D., chairman of the Department of Dermatology at UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Falo and his team worked with technologists at UPMC Enterprises, the commercialization arm of UPMC, to develop the new platform.
Users can access the application online, and a doctor will respond within three business days. The service costs just $49, or less with qualified insurance. For patents whose problems cannot be addressed with this service, UPMC eDermatology will facilitate an in-person visit with a UPMC provider.
The eDermatology platform was designed for Pennsylvania residents suffering from common skin conditions — including rashes, moles, acne and bug bites — and some chronic skin conditions.
