UPMC Celebrates and Supports Local Veterans with Poppies & Pups Events
To honor Pittsburgh-area veterans this Veterans Day, UPMC is celebrating with “Poppies & Pups” community events. UPMC employee veterans will be distributing Buddy Poppies purchased from the Pittsburgh VFW
with the help of the Animal Friends
“Mutt Mob.” Members of the community can visit with veterans and their furry friends to get a poppy of their own and create a personalized message of thanks in a mobile photo booth using #ThanksVets.

WHEN & WHERE:
10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, November 7
96th Annual Veterans Day Parade, Liberty Avenue, downtown Pittsburgh
WHY: One in 12 people in the Pittsburgh region is a veteran, making it the highest per capita veteran population in the country. As the region’s largest employer, UPMC is proud to employ more than 1,700 staff members who are recognized as current or former members of the U.S. armed forces.
The community events taking place throughout Veterans Day weekend use history and healing power to honor veterans’ service while acknowledging their specific health needs. Poppies have been a symbol of veterans and war memorial since World War II, and the Buddy Poppies from the Pittsburgh VFW are assembled by disabled veterans, who are compensated for their work to provide financial assistance. Animal Friends dogs serve local veterans as “Therapets,” providing alternative health support through comfort and companionship.
