UPMC Shadyside Celebrates 150th Anniversary with Cherry Blossom Festival

WHAT:  UPMC will commemorate the 150-year history of UPMC Shadyside with a Cherry Blossom Festival in the hospital’s Japanese garden. Visitors can participate in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, enter to win a painting by a local Japanese artist and learn about the construction of the garden while enjoying traditional Japanese sweets and koto music. More information is available on the Cherry Blossom Festival Facebook page.

WHY: For 15 years, UPMC Shadyside welcomed Japanese nursing students to Pittsburgh to  study the innovations at UPMC hospitals. In 1992, Dr. Kazou Kodera, director of the English Society Institute of Japan and coordinator of the exchange program, donated UPMC Shadyside’s Japanese garden and its cherry blossom trees to commemorate the partnership. The garden was dedicated in memory of cancer patient Shinya Matsudaira, of Nagasaki, Japan, who received treatment at UPMC Shadyside.
