PITTSBURGH, July 26, 2019 – UPMC St. Margaret was recently recognized by the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) with the Lantern Award, becoming only the fourth hospital in Pennsylvania to earn the prestigious award.

The Lantern Award is presented to emergency departments that exemplify exceptional practice and innovative performance in the core areas of leadership, practice, education, advocacy and research.

“This honor emphasizes that our patients are the focus of everything we do, and it supports our goal of being the best place possible for our employees to work,” said Denise Abernethy, clinical director of the Emergency Department at UPMC St. Margaret.

This recognition is received less than a month after UPMC St. Margaret earned its third Magnet® designation, demonstrating its commitment to providing the best patient care possible. The Lantern Award is another example of the excellent care UPMC St. Margaret provides.

Initiatives highlighted within the department included an “escape room,” a simulated mass casualty training program focused on diagnosing and treating multiple patients in the aftermath of a large-scale incident involving various types of injuries.

UPMC St. Margaret is the only hospital in Pennsylvania to receive the Lantern award in 2019. The hospital’s Emergency Department will also be recognized at the ENA’s annual conference in Austin, Texas this fall. The Lantern Award designation is valid for three years, after which time emergency departments may reapply.
