UPMC Health Plan CEO Wins Leadership in Action Award

Diane P. Holder Recognized by Diversity Journal

PITTSBURGH, March 24, 2011 – Diane P. Holder, executive vice president of UPMC, president of the UPMC Insurance Services Division and president and CEO of the UPMC Health Plan, is one of 33 CEOs to earn a Leadership in Action award presented by Diversity Journal magazine.

The annual award by the publication recognizes business leaders who support and participate in their organization’s diversity and inclusion activities. The winners are featured in the March/April Leadership in Action Awards edition of the magazine, which also includes a personal essay written by each CEO that focuses on how they are personally engaged in workforce diversity and how strong diversity initiatives benefit their organizations.

“At UPMC Health Plan, we have had success incorporating inclusion and diversity into our company’s operation because we live by those ideals every day,” Ms. Holder wrote in her essay. “Inclusion drives innovation, and it is what helps our company keep pace with a changing industry. Dignity and respect is a way of doing business at UPMC Health Plan and part of the company’s DNA.”

Among the other CEOs honored were Bob Kelly of BNY Mellon, Robert J. Stevens of Lockheed Martin Corp., Doug Parker of US Airways, and David P. Steiner of Waste Management, Inc.

“It is thrilling to recognize these leaders who are supporting their diversity and inclusion programs,” said James Rector, publisher of Diversity Journal. “And we understand that they are doing more than just signing off on initiatives. They are actually leading these efforts and are making sure each of the programs stay on track. That is true leadership and that should be honored.”

Diversity Journal is a bi-monthly publication based in Cleveland that focuses on diversity/inclusion in business, government, nonprofit, higher education and military settings. Since 1999, the publication has been recognizing CEOs for their achievements, leadership, commitment and engagement in their company’s diversity and inclusion initiatives.

“All of us strive to implement the concepts of dignity and inclusion because we live it,” Ms. Holder writes, “because that is who we are.”
