Dressing: Button-Front Shirt Over-the-Shoulder Method

After an illness, surgery, or injury, some people may have a limited range of motion in their upper body. If motion is limited, simple actions — like getting dressed — may seem difficult.

Helpful tips

Following are a few tips that may help when putting on a button-front shirt:

1. Put your shirt on your lap with the inside of the shirt facing up. Let the sleeve for your weaker (affected) arm hang down between your legs. Put your weaker arm in this sleeve. 2. With your stronger (unaffected) arm, pull the shirt up along your weaker arm andwork it past the elbow. Pull the shirt over the affected shoulder, and then throw the shirt around your back.
3. Move the stronger (unaffected) hand around the collar, and pull the shirt over to the unaffected side of your body. 4. Put your stronger arm in the other sleeve. Adjust your shirt and then fasten the buttons.
